Life insurance and annuity planning

How much life insurance do I need?

When buying a life insurance policy, it's important to choose the right amount of coverage. You don't want too much, paying for protection you don't need. Nor do you want to have too little, leaving your loved ones under-protected.

Term insurance

Term life insurance is typically the most affordable option to protect your family in the event that something happens to you. It’s a policy that covers you for a specific amount of time, or term — typically 10, 15, 20 or 30 years.

Fixed annuities

Most commonly compared to bank CDs, these annuities offer a fixed rate of return and principal protection for a specified term (3 or 5 years). They also grow tax-deferred and provide compounding interest.

Whole life insurance

Unlike term life insurance that protects you for only a specific duration, whole life insurance offers protection throughout your lifetime. It’s the most basic type of permanent life insurance that offers consistency along with some predetermined, guaranteed cash value growth.

Fixed index annuities

Fixed index annuities provide the investor with principal protection with the potential to earn market-like returns. Terms typically range from 5 to 10 years and interest grows tax-deferred.

Universal life insurance

Universal life insurance is more affordable than whole life insurance and can offer cash value growth, along with features that can give you flexibility as your needs change over the years.

Variable annuities

Variable annuities (VA's) provide a tax-sheltered account where investors can get stock and bond market exposure through mutual funds. Many VA's also offer certain features and riders that can be customized for each investor. VA's carry market risk and risk to the investor's principal.
